Our History |

When J.W. Sharman moved to Big Spring in August 1912, there was no congregation of the church of Christ. Immediately he began searching for other members of the church. After finding a few believers, Sharman and others began meeting for worship. The first meeting place of the church of Christ in Big Spring was the Presbyterian church building at the corner of Third and Goliad. Worship services where held there at 3 o’clock on Sundays. The congregation meet at this location for almost five years. Later the building was sold and the church of Christ began meeting in the courtroom. They continued to meet there for six years until they were out of room because of growth. In 1924 the congregation expanded considerably. Land was purchased at the Fourth and Gregg where a small tabernacle was constructed. Plans were to expand at a later time. By 1928 the membership had increased to almost 160 members. There was a need for a larger building. Members decided to sell the property and begin looking for a new location. They once again meet in the courthouse. Land lots were purchased at the current location, Fourteenth and Main, and construction began January of 1929. The original building was built on the corner of 14th and Main, and members began conducting worship services in March of 1929. The membership continued to grow consistently during the 1930s. Since then the congregation has added on to the original building three times. Today the Fourteenth and Main congregation now has over 300 members. |
